My day literally does start at sunset! I have been nocturnal for ten years (a combination of predisposition as well as a post-traumatic nervous system response). I only learned recently that the Celts began their day at sunset, and I cannot tell you how comforting this knowledge is! Thank you for sharing the warren, and for the lovely prayer that I'll certainly be drawing on 💘

It's a wonder to hear how comforting this ancestral way of knowing time is to you in your bones! Thanks a million for sharing - this is so enlivening to read. ❤️‍🔥

What beautiful way of navigating life. If feels as if it fits. Not that I’m nocturnal, but that I love my evening rituals of preparing for bed, cozying up in bed and that liminal space that arrives. So altering my time awareness so that this is the beginning of my days feels inspiring. Thank you, Jennifer. 🩷

Me too April, I'm not nocturnal - I actually love rising early in the morning before sunrise but my 6-year-old son is still in our bed and never slept well for the early years and still doesn't unless you're with him so instead of being frustrated, I learned to reframe by beginning my day at sunset through ritual and journalling and dreaming. I love it! I'm delighted it feels as if it fits for you 💛

I remember when I first came across the idea of beginning the day at dusk... reading about it, then letting that idea settle into my body, felt like the biggest sigh of relief my being has ever exhaled. I share this idea frequently and it's always so wonderful to watch how it lands for others. While I'm not always great at actually living my life that way, when I do remember, it always feels so nourishing and supportive. Looking forward to your journal (and cannot wait for this beautiful oracle deck to be in physical existence... so excited for it to be part of my collection, I already know it will be a favourite)!

Oh go raibh míle maith agat, a Eileen, for your gorgeous words of encouragement - it genuinely means so much, a chara! 💜 I feel there's a catharsis found in the comfort of knowing the sunset way is there even when life inevitably carries us away at times; it's always there, everpresent.

I love how this reorganizes/prioritizes slowing down and dreaming as the beginning of our consciousness—not the tired dregs of the end of a long day. I tend to slip into biphasic sleep at times and have heard of a lot more folx waking around 3am these days—due to peri/menopause, stress, or even a re-aligning with the dark and the potent medicine of Night. Call it my Night Watch. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, 3-5am is associated with the lungs and Grief—which resonates as truth with a population beaten down by an ongoing pandemic and all the undersupported or oft-ignored Grief we carry. Thank you for this divine post. Happy Spring, all. 🌙

Wow, thanks a million for sharing this wisdom about Traditional Chinese Medicine and the lungs and grief. I too feel this with perimenopause so I love how you call it your 'Night Watch'. One of my son's had a dream a couple of years ago when he was 7 that Earth introduced him to a "new element" called "Night" (perhaps not unlike Nyx) so I often think about elemental nature of Night, and as you say its potent medicine. Happy spring to you too! 💚

Go raibh míle maith agat, a chara, we should do a little sunset incubation in Saoirse! Let's explore more on Monday 💜

Hi Jen, in the Bahai faith the day does start at sunset, I can't say I have ever got used to it mind, on a calender it can get confusing. It's just a set thing with no particular explanation so different to your suggested explorations 🙂

I cannot wait for this journal Jen!! And I loved reading about the Celtic perception and history of time. Time has always fascinated me...and made me anxious. Last year I went down a rabbit hole and looked at how the Ancient Greek's worked with time including Chronos and Kairos time and I used it as a way of mapping our Nervous System and time anxiety. It's so interesting. Bring on the Northern Hemisphere summer for the launch of your Sunset Journal 🔥

Thanks a million for sharing Diana and for this new awareness for me about the Bahai faith and starting the day at sunset, and your own experience of this. It's all so fascinating! 🌙

Oh I love this mapping of time anxiety, how powerful Ainslie! I've been reading research on the dire impact feeling time poor has on our anxiety levels which can lead to depression. Your phenomenonal body of work will be such a gift here - I'm still floating since our session on Thurs basking in the morning sun here! I love to think of Kairos time as Tír na nÓg time (the eternal timeless land) as there are rich myths of time moving differently - usually MUCH slower - in the Otherworld. ✨

Oh wow. This might just be the way to get me into journalling finally ; ) Putting myself on the waitlist - I love this idea!

Ooooh amazing Shelley thanks a million for your reflection - it’s so encouraging! ❤️❤️❤️

I love this so much. I've been thinking a lot about Chronos vs. Kairos time (Greek) and I wonder if what you are leaning into is something similar. Would Kairos time be like Tir na nOg time? I wonder....feels similar but different. The mythology of Ireland feels so deep and wild!! Can't wait for your card deck and journal!!

Jennifer Regina Murphy's avatar

Oh I love this Josea! Yes, I see Tír na nÓg as Kairos time and then the waking time in Ireland as Chronos. In Imram Brain (from the other night's fairytale céilí) we see this movement of time when they return from Tír na mBan/Land of Women/the Otherworld as hundreds of years have passed in Ireland. Irish mythology is like a dream - so deep and wild for sure 😍

Absolutely echo the other comments of how lovely to embrace this as a night owl myself! I always try to watch the sunset and want to be more intentional about honoring the moon too. Thank you so much for sharing! Can’t wait for the journal too.

Jennifer Regina Murphy's avatar

Thanks a million for sharing Jess and for your encouragement! It's gorgeous to read how you always try to watch the sunset. I was reading recently about a revival in the Dutch tradition of "dusking". It feels like so many beautiful practices are making themselves (re)known for our times. 🌙

Jess Neary's avatar

Oh I love that! Agreed- I think so many people want to reconnect to these simple yet universally human moments. We’re remembering the point of a beautiful, full life.

Where can I sign on to the waitlist for the Sunset Journal?

I've been a flamekeeper for Brighid for twenty five years and my vigils begin at sunset. I never thought about living my entire life that way.

It gels beautifully with the concept of slowing down towards bedtime, getting off screens and blue light devices that destroy our circadian rhythms. It is in fact aligning with nature's rhythm.

Looking forward to this! ♥️

This is so heartening and inspiring to read Siobhan, thanks a million for sharing! I love how your Brigid vigils begin at sunset and for 25 years now - wow! The waitlist for the journal can be found here https://www.celticcreatives.com/sunset Wishing you a beautiful sunset this eve. 🧡

This is so beautiful Nicole and incredibly synchronistic because I use the three cauldrons (belly, heart and head) as a framework for beginning my day at sunset. Thanks a million for sharing, what a gift to read and receive! X
