The Celtic Harper
The song I played at the beginning of our call was by Turlough O’Carolan, who is often considered the last of the great Celtic harpers in the Gaelic tradition in Ireland. Blinded by smallpox at the ripe age of 18 years, he apprenticed himself to the harp, and what he composed is a reflection of the inner sight that is a portal to the Celtic Otherworld.
On Monday evening just gone, I lay by the Sheela-na-Gig at the Hill of Tara while Aoife Lowden my creative companion in our upcoming women’s retreat, Aisling Áes Dána, exquisitely played Carolan’s Dream on her harp. It felt like we’d been spirited away in a ritual we curated to honour the women who will be on our retreat before we even know who they are.
