I know I usually keep the same image for the membership schedule, but this turnip was having none of it. It has me plagued to be front and centre this Samhain season. The original Jack O’Lantern was a turnip before Irish immigrants across the Atlantic adapted to pumpkins. This fine specimen was peering out of the mist atop the mound of Dowth, a 5,000-year-old megalithic temple or fairy mound, early one morning after Oíche Shamhna, Halloween.
A lot of Irish myths are centred around Samhain. Echtrae Nera, ‘The Adventure of Nera,’ is a particularly macabre one, hence the accompanying quote as befits the turnip.
