La llamada (The Call) by Remedios Varo

Hello Shining Ones,

For our creative ritual this month, I wanted to share a simple tool to amplify the energy of your dreams. What do I mean by this? I mean to elucidate the dream message. Dreams are slippery fish, so we need to throw the line down into the unconscious, hook the fish, and reel it up into our conscious awareness.

‘Another way we can make life accord with the angel is when, each morning, we return from the dream soul trying to adjust to the day world, that moment when the two souls exchange places in the driver’s seat.’

James Hillman, We’ve Had a Hundred Years of Psychotherpy

The ‘angel’ here is our soul’s guide, what the Greeks called our daimon, the Romans our genius, the Irish our anam chara, our ‘soul friend’.

Dreams are our soul illuminators.

Oracle Card Ritual

For this ritual you will need:

  • A piece of card the size of an oracle or tarot card. A tarot card is typically 2.75 by 4.75 inches, but it really doesn’t have to be the perfect dimensions. You can use regular paper, but ideally it should be resilient; I use thicker watercolour paper for this.

  • Anything you like to draw with e.g. markers, colouring pencils, crayons, pastels, charcoal…

  • A night dream!

Follow the Dream

The easiest way for me to share how this works is to give you an example from my own dreamscape.

A few years back, when I started making oracle cards to work with the energy of my dreams, I would take a symbol or image from my dream, draw it on the card, then write on the back a constellation of meaning, whatever associations I had with this image. I didn’t censor myself or try to understand what I was drawing or writing, I just let it flow.

I would then place it on my altar, or stick it on my desk, or put it in my journal, or carry it around with me so as to open the channels of communication between me and my dreamworld in my waking time.

What is the dream trying to tell me? Where does the energy want to go?

Dreams want to go somewhere. Jung spoke about our libido as life force, as psychic energy, which has a gradient, a path, a definite direction that it wants to go. Dreams want to go towards our wholeness, our calling in life, because dreams are a dialogue with the soul.

‘Then I was free to listen to dreams, images and inner allies. These became my guides. When a woman reduces the emphasis on the outer heroic quest for self-definition, she is free to explore her images and her voice...’

Maureen Murdock, The Heroine’s Journey

Dream Formula
